Making the decision to enter treatment for substance abuse is often one of the most difficult, and rewarding choices you’ll ever make. No one wants to think of themselves as an “addict” or admit that they have a problem, however no progress will be made by staying in the same destructive situation. A greater number of treatment programs are now available to those who have decided that enough is enough.

Traveling for treatment is a great way to begin your journey to a new and fulfilling life free of drugs and alcohol. There are excellent programs located in vacation destinations around the country. Why spend your days in treatment stuck with gloomy weather? Consider a sunny, beautiful location such as Scottsdale, AZ or Las Vegas and enjoy yourself while learning the necessary tools to successfully overcome addiction.

Anonymity is another benefit of traveling for treatment. Allowing yourself to focus on your recovery and self, free of worry and fear of being seen in an inpatient treatment center is critical. No one wants to run into their neighbor, classmate or fellow PTA member while he or she is getting treatment for substance abuse. Choosing a location away from home also provides distance between the substance abuser and potentially negative influences such as friends, using buddies, and dealers.

Treatment Programs

Once you have decided on treatment, the next step is finding the treatment program best for you. There are different types of treatment programs, all of which work with the individual to address issues from the past and learn to cope with them without the use of drugs or alcohol. The goal of the treatment programs is to heal and arm the person with coping mechanisms and strategies to handle future stressors and issues that, in the past, led to using.

Inpatient treatment centers provide the most intensive rehabilitation programs. Set in a residential facility with around the clock medical treatment and care, these programs are often recommended for people seeking help with addiction. With an inpatient treatment program, an individual is free to focus on self and recovery without the added stress of normal daily life.

Outpatient treatment programs also provide intensive therapy, but without the residential aspect. Outpatient programs often are on a part-time basis and therefore do not require a full leave of absence from work or school. This treatment protocol is usually much less expensive than inpatient programs, which can be substantial.

Therapy

Group therapy is a cornerstone of addiction treatment. All 12 Step programs are based in group recovery support. Group therapy in treatment programs allow each individual to connect to others in the same situation as him or her and to form strong bonds with fellow suffers of the disease of addiction.

Individual therapy plays an important role in the recovery process. Understanding the underlying issues and addressing any mental health concerns is crucial to healing past wounds. Often, such disorders as depression, anxiety and other are co-occurring with addiction. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or CBT, is an established effective treatment method for the disease of addiction. This method allows the individual to identify patterns of thought and change them into new positive and healthy thought processes. Individual therapy has the added benefit of privacy, allowing the person to vent and work through issues that he or she may not feel comfortable discussing in front of a group.

Family Therapy focuses on the substance user and at least one other close relative or friend. This therapeutic model allows all to address the substance abuse and other behaviors. A parent or spouse may have other concerns, such as mental health issues, conduct disorders, conflict within the home, or abuse that needs to be resolved. Family therapy also educates loved ones about addiction and work together with the addicted person to work through past issues. All involved are able to set boundaries and goals and communicate in a healthy and productive way.

Individual therapy is another proven technique to treat addiction. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, of CBT, a form of psychotherapy, is an established effective treatment model. Through this process, the individual learns how and why negative thoughts occur and learn to change them into positive, healthy and productive ones.

Family therapy can also be crucial to an individual’s successful triumph over drugs and alcohol. In family therapy sessions, family members are educated about addiction and work with the addicted family member to get through past difficulties. All members are equipped with critical communication techniques and other coping strategies, such as healthy boundaries, which allow for a group dynamic that is healthier in the future.
